Measure more than the deck surface
Record the deck length and width, height above grade, stair runs, landings, guardrails, and the open or occupied space below.
Show the ground below
Photograph patios, doors, windows, air-conditioning equipment, plantings, slopes, and anything that limits a safe material-lowering area.
Check overhead and buried services
Identify overhead lines, exterior wiring, irrigation, gas, and other services near posts or access routes. Do not assume a line is inactive.
Plan the load-out
A raised deck may need smaller pieces and more handling than a low platform. Measure gates and turns, and show the full carry route to the truck or staging point.
Define the footing scope
Count visible posts and note concrete around them. State whether posts and footings should remain, be cut to a stated level, or be evaluated for removal.
